THE GREEN CITY, THE HAPPY CITY

Gwangju is a happy and green city full of energy. With a population more than one million and Mudeungsan National Park (the gorgeous green mountain) overlooking the city with the elevation over 1,000 meters, Gwangju has been executing projects which improve the environment of the Mudeungsan National Park and water quality in order to protect the forests and ensure a supply of clean water.

The spirit of the southern region shines through Mt. Mudeung, a mountain 1,187m above sea level, displaying various faces as the seasons change. Royal azalea blossoms of light pink in spring and the fresh flowing water of the valley streams in summer attract people who are weary of city life. Beautiful plants in great abundance in the fall and snowflakes in winter create a scene from an enchanting korean traditional painting.

Opened in March 2006, Gwangjuho Lake Ecopark attracts many citizens with the gentle waves of the lake and cool breezes of Modeung Mountain. It is located past Wonhyo Temple and just before the Soswaewon Garden. Enjoy over 170,000 Kinds of wind flowers including snowbells, quince, and maples.

A variety of trees and flowering plants are a source of pride for Sajik Park, the first park laid out in Gwangju. An octagonal pavilion serves as an observation platform from which you can get a view of the whole city. In spring, cherry blossoms are in full bloom at the entrance to the park. The shade of the locust trees in spring and the scarlet-tinged leaves in the fall enchant visitors. You may want to go for a walk down a winding mountain path. In the park the sunrise on Mudeung Mountain presents a grand spectacle.
